New 'Scream VI' synopsis teases a darker, more traumatic story for Sam and Tara

This past March, Ghostface hit the streets of New York.

It's hard to believe that horror fans are more than a month away from the release of the highly anticipated Scream VI. The Slayers took the blood-soaked terrorist out of Woodsboro and onto the streets of New York City. The first full trailer was released in January, heralding a much darker movie than fans are used to seeing from the meta-series. Thanks to Alamo Drafthouse, however, a new synopsis for Scream VI doubles down on the latest installment's inner darkness, along with sisters Sam (Melissa Barrera) and Tara Carpenter (Jenna Alter plus) shared trauma between. Given that this is a detailed plot summary, beware of spoilers ahead.

The synopsis reads:

As the survivors of the recent attack in Woodsboro travel to New York City for college, Tara, our final girl, begins to experience manic psychological breakdowns while seeing the ghosts of past killers. Meanwhile, her sister, Sam, attempts to manipulate her by pretending to be Ghostface. But when their plan goes wrong, three new masked killers appear on the scene, leaving the question of who will survive and who will be the final victim left to be answered.

Even though the trailer has been out for a few weeks now, there are still many mysteries surrounding the plot of this New York City-centric killing spree. That changes with this frankly insane synopsis. For one Tara, the movie amusingly called "The Last of Us Girl," she's faring poorly in the mental health department. Scream VI looks like it's really exploring the lasting effects of trauma, which is a whole new angle on the franchise. Trauma a big factor in The Scream: TV series, But as stunning as Sidney Prescott is, these films rarely touch her psyche, despite being the central point of five Ghostface murder plots. It looks like Sidney's absence is taking more risks in the storytelling department this time around, while Sam and Tara are still fresh enough characters to do some pretty intense things with them.

However, the main new key message that every Scream fan will focus on is that Tara "sees the ghost of a past killer". There are a lot of theories out of that statement alone. You can take this literally, Tara seeing people like Billy (Skeet Ulrich), Stu (Matthew Lillard), Jill (Emma Roberts) or Amber (Mitch Madison) ) such a franchise. The latter is Tara's best friend. However, "Scream" has always been a reality-based franchise, and "Scream 2022" has certain elements, mainly Sam seeing hallucinations of her father Billy. Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillette are very adamant that it was a hallucination, not a ghost.

The most important thing this synopsis hints at is that there may be one or more past killers, thought to be dead, who are actually alive. This also confirms With three killers this time around, fans have been screaming for years that past Ghostfaces like Stu are alive, even though Williamson denies that particular theory. However, the grimace shrine in the trailer just adds fuel to the fire. Another major focus of Scream VI will be Sam's constant demons. It's a safe bet that we'll see Ulrich return as Billy, making Sam's life a living hell in her head. However, the synopsis mentioning that Sam "manipulated" Tara into thinking she was Ghostface is another fascinating piece to this Slayer puzzle. From the way it's written, it seems like Sam is doing this to get Tara over the fear caused by the events of the fifth movie. Tara is trying to enjoy college life like Sidney in Scream 2, but the real Ghostface is never too far behind in this killer series.

Scream VI hits theaters in New York City and everywhere on March 10, 2023. Judging by this new synopsis, this latest film will be the craziest and darkest entry in the franchise yet. As horror fans anxiously await March, you can check out the Scream VI trailer below.
