First 'Gran Turismo' footage teases an immersive theatrical experience

The film starring David Harbor will be released this summer.

Sony seems serious about bringing its immersive games to theaters as equally immersive and story-driven cinematic experiences. A sneak peek of the Gran Turismo movie featuring the first footage of the film, which looks to be more than just adrenaline and racing.

Coupled with Sony's announcement at the CES press conference in Las Vegas that the game Gran Turismo 7 will get a free VR upgrade when the Sony Playstation VR 2 headset launches, the film's sneak peek cites star Orlando Bleu Tom, David Harbour, and Archie Madekwe tell how Gran Turismo was built for theater, and how it features not only cars, but plays and love stories as well. But how is it possible to make a game like Gran Turismo into a movie?

The Gran Turismo series of games centered around (you guessed it!), cars, and race cars without plots or characters, so the movie makes an interesting use of the PlayStation Studios series by telling the true story of Jann Mardenborough. Mardenborough competes in the GT (Gran Turismo) academy competition and beats more than 90,000 entries; he gets the chance to drive for Nissan 24 Hours of Dubai and went on to win the Nissan Series to become a professional racing driver.

Gran Turismo will be the latest in a series of video game adaptations planned by Sony: TV shows such as Horizon: Zero Dawn, God of War, The Last of Us, and Twisted Metal, as well as video game film adaptations Ghost of Tsushima, directed by Chad Stahelski. Gran Turismo and Sony may hope to repeat Uncharted's $400 million financial success and continue to break the "no movie based on a video game is good" mantra. We can't wait to see what Gran Turismo does on the big screen. Vroom vroom, start your engines!

In addition to Harbor, Bloom and Madekwe, Gran Turismo also stars Darren Barnet, Geri Halliwell Horner and Djimon Hounsou. It is directed by Neil Blomkamp from a screenplay by Jason Hall and Zach Behring, with Doug Belgrade, Asad Chizlbash, Carter Swan and Dana Blue Nettie serves as producer. Kazunori Yamauchi, Herman Hulst, Jason Hall and Matthew Hirsch serve as executive producers.

Gran Turismo will be released August 11. You can watch the first footage from the adrenaline-fueled racing film below:
